Farmers.gov provides farmers, ranchers, private foresters, and agricultural producers with online self-service applications, educational materials, engagement opportunities, and business tools to increase efficiency and productivity while preserving and fostering long-held traditional relationships between local USDA offices and producers.
In this capacity I was responsible for the following:
Manage the UX design team and operations on Farmers.gov, a high-profile federal project on the U.S. president’s management agenda
Lead ideation sessions with designers to solve the strategic challenges set forth by the Secretary of Agriculture
Create the vision for the customer experience and align a cross-functional Agile team to it
Understand customer behavior and lead collaborative sessions to determine conceptual designs for new products
Think at a high level about product strategy and planning and leading visioning sessions
Work closely with USDA and stakeholders to create a shared understanding of the vision for their product
Lead workshops to discuss feature prioritization and tradeoff decisions while aligning with broader strategy
Oversee the creation, scaling, and implementation of a design system for the Farmers.gov enterprise. Work with multiple teams at USDA on adoption and governance strategies
Lead all research efforts (qualitative and quantitative). Mentor junior designers on summative and formative research methods such as:
Semi-structured interviews
Card Sorting and Tree Testing
Heuristic evaluations
Usability evaluations
Unmoderated user research
Create monitoring and evaluation plans using Goggle Analytics, Google Tag Manager and HotJar
My Drupal GovCon 2020 talk on Scaling MVPs at Farmers.gov
The adoption of the site has been significant, compared to other USDA digital properties
Service center staff reported reduction in farmers calling them for basic program information
The ease of use and utility of the site has allowed us to win the client's trust and get awarded additional contract years totaling over $8 million
Farmers.gov is comprised of two main services:
Public educational portal (Drupal 8)
Authenticated transactional portal (Salesforce)
To ensure a seamless experience between the public site and the authenticated portal, my team was tasked with creating the Farmers.gov Design System. The system unites all 12 SAFe Agile teams working on the Farmers.gov enterprise, streamlines development and design processes, and provides customers with a consistent user interface from one environment to the other.
My role on this task was to create the design system, lead the rollout strategy, socialize the growth management plan and governance model.

We had five weeks to gather requirements and design the tool. After series of stakeholder interviews, rapid testing, and content strategy, we developed multiple iterations of the solution. Below you can see the final interactive wireframe, a user flow, and the final tool on production.
My role for this task was to work with stakeholders on gathering requirements and coach junior team members on the best ways to gather user feedback on a short deadline.
